Question:

Why isn't my cockatiel singing, eating or drinking?

I got a new cockatiel yesterday and I haven't seen it eating by itself. I have to feed it one seed at a time. It won't drink ANY water and it won't even sing! His name is Sunny and he's very very very very very very very friendly towards everyone. He will go on anyone's hand and just sit there. He eats millet, but only if I feed it to him. I am worried about Sunny and I don't want to lose him. He is the best bird I've ever had. Is there anything I can do for my 3 month old Sunny, without seeing a vet??? By the way, his droppings are coiled up and a normal greenish color. In the middle there is a white spot with a liquid outer lining. PLEASE HELP ME AND SUNNY!!!

  1. it sounds like it might be sick with a cold or other.  take it back or keep hand feeding it for awhile...maybe it is used to being hand fed.

  2. Since you just got it yesterday. He probably is still adjusting to the new stuff. Until he can figure out where the cups are and the water is, you should keep feeding him. Also touch a dab of water with your finger and let him drink it from your finger. Otherwise he seems pretty normal. Btw while you feed him, bring him closer to the cups, where the food is, and once he see's where his food is, stop feeding him. You will let him know that you won't feed him anymore and that he has to feed himself and so he'll have to go to the cups and eat himself. Just give him 2more days, and if it doesn't seem like anything has changed than you should take him to the vet for a check up, to make sure he's okay.

  3. might be really sick

  4. Don't worry too much ... you just got him yesterday, right?  My parakeet didn't eat a single thing for two days when I got him.  Remember he's in a strange place.  Give him time to adjust.  The puffing could just mean he's cold.  They do that to get comfy.  If he's a baby he will sleep a lot too.  Have you seen him yawn?... that is so cute!

My suggestion is keep watching him and call your breeder.  They will usually be very glad to help... remember this was their baby first...lol.

Avian vets are very expensive... and if you call them they will tell you that you need to go see them even if you really have nothing to worry about.

    Good Luck.... hope i helped

  5. call a vet asap! and, check the refund/exchange policy from the store. but next time buy it from a breeder!

  6. I got my own baby cockatiel one week ago! Not eating or drinking is quite normal for the first couple of days, as your tiel is going through a difficult adjustment period. Our cockatiel did not touch any food until the 3rd morning we had him, then he seemed to "come alive", and now he's a regular chow hound!!  He also did not go near his water dish for about 4 days, then seemed to suddenly discover it.  Give your baby some time, he will come around! He can survive on millet until he starts eating his normal diet again (his droppings sound great); he's just temporarily lost his appetite.  Talk with him, offer treats through the cage bars (even a piece of wheat bread or pasta may be welcome to him), and give him some time. Place his food, water and treats up high in his cage next to the perch he loves best (he must love one near the top of the cage). Our tiel also did not make a sound until 5 days later, so no worries there! He sounds like he was handfed and handled often, that's great!! (ours too)  It gives you quite the advantage to be able to keep him tame and well-mannered!  Just keep handling him everyday, take him out of his cage often, and he will stay sociable and sweet.  Wishing you and your little guy the best!!  =)
