Why isn't my film camera working?

I've been using a film Canon EOS Rebel X for a few days now. I recently shot in Boston and at a concert, all day yesterday.

This morning, I turned on the camera, and it showed only a film icon. Usually, when batteries are inserted and working, and the camera is turned to Automatic, the screen will show the film icon, a battery icon, and how many exposures remaining on the film roll.

Suggestions?

the manual said the display will blank if battery is running low and camera will not operate til u replace the batteries.  pull the batteries out and check if they're still working or simple replace with new one.
