Why isn't my home theatre speakers not working?

I've recently purchased a home theatre system. The front speakers work but the center piece and surround sound are not working. All the cables are working. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. cause you need to buy new ones

  2. Be sure that the source material (type of sound encoding) is Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital 5.1.

If the sound source is stereo, there will be no sound coming from the center and rear speakers.

If you do have the right source, then try swapping one rear speaker for a front one. If you now get sound on the one that used to be the rear, then the amplifier for that rear output is bad. If you don't then the speaker may be bad. Follow the same procedure to test the other speakers.

  3. If your home theater speaker "isn't not working", doesn't that really mean that it is working???  In that case, it sounds to me as though there's no problem at all.

  4. sounds like your receiver has a sound selector on it.  Every brand has a different name for this. On Yamaha is is called DSP.  One of the choices is "Stereo".  With this setting, only the front two speakers work.  Change the setting to Dolby, or 70MM, or Dolby Digital, or a myraid of other choices.

  5. Depends on the source  for one, not everything you listen to will be in surround sound, therefore not all speakers will have sound.

Also it can depend on what your listening mode is set to, is it set to stereo , Dolby Pro Logic, or Dolby Digital?
