Question:

Why isn't my pumpkin plant producing pumpkins?

I have a monster pumpkin plant growing. It's leaves are bigger than my head. It's putting out several flowers, about a dozen currently, maybe two dozen more growing. The problem is, the flowers are simply falling off when they die/dry out. The plant isn't growing any actual fruit. Anyone know why?

  1. too wet, too dry, the pH of the soil is not correct...like tomatoes, if conditions are not correct, the blooms just fall off without being fertilized, and no pumpkins! For most areas, it is too late to worry about pumpkins...fall is upon us and these things need lots of growing time. Goldwing

  2. it maybe just producing all male flowers(they only bloom for a day or 2)

the female flower looks like the male flower except it has a small round "pumpkin" at it's base.

sometimes a pumpkin plant will only produce male flowers if the soil/water conditions are not correct.

    here is a great website!!

  3. Don't let the flowers dry out, try spraying them

  4. Bees pollinate pumpkin flowers; have you noticed a lack of bees? I mention this because the U.S. has lost billions upon billions of bees to an unknown virus or bacteria; the problem is nationwide. Beekeepers, who supply arborists etc., find hivebox after hivebox with no bees: they simply disappear. This could be your problem.

However, it's too late in the season to start over. You might consider spraying the plants with a bee attractant, or self-pollinating with a q-tip.
