Why isn't my punch needle working for punch needle embroidery?

The thread keeps coming out and I've got the canvas REALLY tight in the hoop. Help, this is really frustrating me as I've been really crafty for a long time.

  1. Make sure you don't have too much tension on the thread, like none at all.  Also make sure you aren't trying to use the tail, leave it hanging out.  Also is the weave of the fabric too big, if it is then there isn't any tightness to keep the thread in.  Also once you punch in a part of the fabric, don't punch in the same hole.

  2. I don't know what you have been told about punch needle, but you need to iron a stabilizer on the back of the fabric, I use steam a seam and muslin.  This is what you draw your design on that  you are punching.  When you punch this catches and holds the thread and the first time it is washed it draws the threads closed and holds the design in the fabric.  I have a punch needle design of Betty Boop and one of Alf (remember the alien?)  I did 10+ years ago and they still look as good as the day I did them.  The sweatshirt is a little faded but not the punch needle yarn.

  3. I agree with the first person who responded but there is also another factor...if you are using too many threads that it makes the tension too tight in the needle, it will pull out as well as it doesn't have enough "give" in the thread.
