Why isn't my toddler sleeping?

My daughter is 19 months old. She is on a decent schedule and has been sticking with it for the last year. Normally we don't have any major problems getting her to go to bed. Some nights she cries a little (about 10 mins) but then falls asleep.

For the last few nights (about 3 nights now) she wont go to bed like normal. She will go through her normal bed time routine but when we put her in her crib she screams, not cries, screams like bloody murder. It's horrible. Last night was the worst. She screamed like someone was hurting her but nothing was wrong. As soon as we went into the room and picked her up she was silent.

Not sure what to do or what the cause could be. She only screams when we put her in her bed.

  1. My daughter does this too. Every time she starts it we make a doctor's appointment. almost every time they tell us she has an ear infection. it is painful for them to lay down. try to elevate her mattress a little bit by putting blankets underneath it. we get her up when she cries longer than 15 minutes and she plays happily in her play pen until about 10 or 10:30. by this time she is too tired to even cry herself to sleep

  2. maybe there is something in her room that is scaring her.......or maybe she is ready to be put into a toddler bed.....my son at 15 monthsold did that we went out bought him a toddler bed and after that he slept fine....hope this helps

  3. she might have had a bad dream in there of someone hurting her or something being in there to get her all kids go through the phrase of monsters being in there closets or under there bed and else where. so she might be going through that phrase. only thing i know you can do is let her fall asleep in with you then take her in her room or just plain out let her sleep with you for a lil while but not too much cause she might get used to it.

  4. Could she be teething?  She may be starting to have her 2nd year molars come through... my daughter did go through the same thing at that age but that was because we took her dummy away, it only took her a few nights to get over it though.

  5. To me it sounds like she has the classic case of cry it out syndrome.  She'll need to cry it out a few nights (while you sob into your pillow, maybe) and then she'll be doing wonderful again.

    Good Luck!
