Why isn't planet x talked about in the news?

I've heard about planet x coming into the orbit in 2012 and apparently 3 quarters of the population will die because of it's effects or something like that. I know there are videos on the internet talking about planet x but I was wondering why it isnt on the news or anything.

if the world was going to come to an end in four years wouldn't more people know about it?

  1. You have answered your own question.

If any of that was true it would be headline news all over the world.

There is a small asteroid (not planet) due to come close in 2012 and come even closer in 2036, but the chances of it striking The Earth are current 40,000 to 1.

In any case astronomers are watching it closely and keeping governments informed, plans are laid to use either spacecraft to "steer" it or nukes to blast it, if required.

  2. I'm not familiar with this story, but it sounds like yet another Internet fear meme.

If I recall correctly, back in the 1970s and 1980s, some astronomers trying to explain anomalies in the orbital movements of Neptune postulated the existence of an undiscovered tenth planet beyond the orbit of Pluto (which was then considered the ninth planet).  This hypothetical planet was named "Planet X" and inspired many astronomers to search for it, but nothing big enough to explain the gravitational anomalies was ever discovered.  The idea of Planet X has since been mostly discounted by the astronomy field.

Short answer: I don't think you have anything to worry about.
