Hi I'm going to try to petition the ncaa to accept college rugby as a varsity sport because I believe that the second most popular sport in the whole world ought to deserve a little more recognition, so does anyone agree with me, also any bit of information you can give will help me out, number of players, teams sholarships and fans, also who to send a letter to but I'll be calling as well to see what I can do but any information you can give me to send to them to try to convince them to respect one of the greatest sports ever played would be great

  1. because these people dont like forighn sports

  2. Let me know what you find out.  I'm the president of my college rugby team so if you find out anything let me know and pass along the petition and I will get a bunch of college rugby players to sign it for you.

  3. It may be the second most popular sport in the real world, but the US is not part of the 'real world' in a sporting sense. They have their own little niche sports like baseball & NFL that are uniquely american that they like to call the teams that win it world champions, despite only playing amongst themselves. Soccer slowly made its way into the US so rugby is not a lost cause, but it will be a long time before a body like the NCAA give them recognition.

  4. This link http://www.usarugby.org/ would be your best bet on how to approach the NCAA usa rugby is already on board with this concept and have valuable information to get you started.

Apparently womens rugby is already on the NCAA books as an emerging sport and perhaps with a bit more pressure from the rugby community mens rugby will follow.

good luck with that, would love to see USA jump a couple of tiers in the rugby world.

  5. It isn't accepted because the NCAA are a bunch of poofs.  Basketball and Vollyball are more acceptable than Rugby?  Please.  I will sign your petition, and I will recruit others to do so.  I would also encourage you to get in touch with USA Rugby and get them on board as well.

  6. There are currently 4 women’s rugby varsity teams supported by the NCAA: Eastern Illinois Univ, West Chester Univ, Bowdoin Univ, and Southern Vermont Univ.

NCAA has been able to approach the college officials with rugby as a women’s emerging sport due to a law called title IX- which basically says that women have right of equality for representation of sports from their college/ university...NCAA has been able to approach universities based on this federal law for women... unfortunately the men’s teams are saturated already and do not have room/ space/ funding for emerging sports.  NCAA women’s rugby is in its second year and to be fully functional, wants 40 women’s teams involved.  There’s a LONG way to go!!!!  Because of the title IX law, USA rugby had to petition to even get rugby onto the list of emerging sports- and that took a long time- like 9 years... and finally in 2002 it was put on the list... i think NCAA has 10 years to develop the program... and get to 40 teams!!!  Rugby is not even on the emerging sports list for men’s NCAA sports yet... I’m not even sure they have a list!  The other emerging women’s sports are:  archery, badminton, equestrian, squash, synchronized swimming, team handball…  rugby is the only cool one!!!  Basically the possibility of men’s NCAA recognition relies on the success of the women’s program.  So the best thing you can do is get your college to sponsor a women’s team and get involved with them.

There is huge controversy as to if rugby club sports can really transfer to the NCAA… especially because of the social aspect of our sport.  There will be so many more rules and regulations when involving the NCAA, but the http://www.usarugby.org/default.asp  site has a question/ answer section highlighting all these concerns.

Hope this helps.  Get involved with women’s rugby!!!!

  7. Soccer has not made it in america yet  the mls is not a serious league.    no one even knows when the season starts and stops it  seems  to run  12 months out of the year.

Rugby is much  more suited to american sports  with the  collisons and fast pace.  however it wont work here.   in america  only the  TV sports do well  football nascar, basketball.  those sports  allow many breaks in the action great for selling commercials.   rugby is non stop like soccer  no commercials  means  it wont be on american tv and  we  miss out on a great sport!!

  8. set up an online petitiion on ipetition.com

  9. I wish it would.  They might even have a real post season tourney to figure out the national champion.

  10. I like you dude... you get the addresses/ websites of all local clubs around the country and get them to support your idea with a petition letter from each (they will do this) and make copies and take to the NCAA . Dude I will so help, that is a worthy thing to do.
