  1. It is a country, it isn't a fully independent state. There is some contention as to whether or not Scotland could survive without English money - there is already a deficit as to what scotland contributes in taxes to what it receives in investment...so it's simple economics.

  2. It is a country.

Its part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.  this is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ireland is not part of the UK, its an independent country.  Only the six counties in the North - aka "Northern Ireland"  - is part of the UK.

  3. Scotland is a part of the British Isles that England has been trying to offload for years! Why?Because it has been living off the backs of the English and Welsh taxpayer for generations!

For some of us Scottish independence cannot come quickly enough!Providing! The English and Welsh do not have to keep supporting it in taxes!

No more English and Welsh taxes for Scotland!

  4. Umm Scotland IS a country! What on earth do you mean???

  5. cos its too busy letching of england.

4 thumbs down, touched a nerve I believe!

  6. What?!? It IS a country!

"Scotland [ˈskɑtlənd] (help·info) (Gaelic: Alba) is a country[5][6] that occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It is part of the United Kingdom,[5] and shares a land border to the south with England. It is bounded by the North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the southwest. In addition to the mainland, Scotland consists of over 790 islands[7] including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides."

  7. Scotland is confusing like most of the UK. It is not independent state but it has a certain amount of political power devolved to it from the British state. Such as a parliament etc. This is a part of an ongoing struggle between Britain and its celtic periphery. The struggle is also cultural they want to be acknowledged as a separate nation. and to an extent nationality is devolved in different sporting areas like Rugby and Soccer where this teams are represent internationally. Paradoxically Britain is also considered a nation as a sum of its parts and represents itself at some cultural events like sport as Britain.

Ireland is not a part of the UK, it is an independant republic. This is why it represents itself fully. It has fought for idependance and become a fully fledged nationstate.

Furthermore Ireland has done very well out of idenpendance and has one of the highest standards of living in the world now. I expect scotland could do the same and even more with the natural resources that it has off its coast.

  8. You could say why aren't England, Wales and NI countries yet if that's your logic.

They are all countries within Great Britain, United Kingdom.

Eire/Southern Ireland is not part of Great Britain or the United Kingdom but is part of the British Isles.

Southern Ireland is independant from the UK. So it has it's own Olympians.

  9. it is!

  10. Scotland is a country, and a d**n fine one.

    What a strange question!

  11. it is a country! do you mean by itself and not in the uk? and dave wales isnt spelt like the sea creature! brtain is also not a separate country to scotland and wales. england wales and scoltand are IN britain, the UK is Britain and Northern Ireland

They are representing the UK in the the olympics because they are PART OF THE UK!!!! Just like england, wales and Northern Ireland. FOUR COUNTRIES MAKE UP THE UK!!!!

I said Northern Ireland. There are two parts, northern ireland which is part of the UK and the republic of ireland, which is its own country, at one point under British rule, got independence but Northern ireland wanted to stay with UK , so it did! Clear?
