Question:

Why isn't the British Army "royal"?

Let me preface this with the fact that I am an American. From what I can see, there is the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Royal Marines..........and then the British Army.

So why isn't it "royal" while the others are?

  1. Goes back to the English Civil War.  The Army went under control of the Parliamentarians.  After the Restoration, the Crown got a little revenge by not bestowing the name "royal".  The Navy generally stayed loyal to Charles...

  3. Parliament's New Model Army defeated Charles's (King Charles the First) Royal Army during the English Civil War.

    That's my best guess as to why the name Royal has been dropped.

    Royal Army regiments have been pulled into the Parliament run New Model Army for practical reasons and to provide a sense of pride and tradition in the Army.

  4. i think historically the army was under control of the parliament where as the navy was under the control of the crown.
