  1. Because several of them had to pay the McCanns hundreds of thousands of pounds for printing lurid - and false - stories about them and they don't want to get stung again, seems to be the most obvious answer.

    As these newspapers found to their cost (also re: Murat) it is unwise to print something defamatory about someone unless you can prove it, and that includes repeating someone else's words, such as the gentleman's book you link to.
