EDM has a massive fan base and i always wondered why there isn't a free FM station broadcasting in the large cities? Is there something I'm missing or do you think an EDM based station could work......You cant turn on the radio and hear trance, house or progressive...I feel that if people listened to this genre of music, they would love it!!! How Could You NOT!

  1. US radio stations do a lot of research before launching formats. The research, so far at least, doesn't show enough interest from the favored demographics to justify a 24 hour format for EDM.

At some point that may change - once the research shows enough people will listen to generate good ratings and allow the station to sell enough commercials to make it financially feasible.

I agree with you that it is puzzling that big cities (esp. NY) haven't seen this as a format option. However when you consider that even the lowest-ranked stations aim for a 25-54 year old ideally, perhaps it's the age of those who like EDM that's holding them back. There may also be some questions about copyrights because of the mash-ups used by the club jocks, or the program directors don't think they can emulate the club experience on the radio.

    Just some thoughts. Good question.

  2. i think thats a good idea

EDM is not heard enough and i would love to listen to it

theres a channel in Toronto that plays dance music at certain times of the day

but i think it would be a good idea

u wanna come to Toronto and make one for me?

  3. Not as massive as you would like to believe, or it would be on the air. No study has shown it would be profitable. Even the popular mix shows of Saturday nights are mostly gone.

Sub-genres are lucky if they get an hour a week.

This is not a put down of any music, simply a business reality. That's why there are so many FM gospel stations now. Do you really think the corporations got religious? No, they discovered they could wipe out the unprofessional A.M. stations that were selling block programming to gasbag pastors, and filled it with music and professional announcers. I know an atheist who is an enthusiastic "believer" on air. She loves that paycheck.

  4. You probably have to turn to internet radio for your more specific tastes. I found some EDM stations here :

You will probably do better searching for what you want with a more specific search here : http://www.internet-radio.org.uk/search/
