I don't know, but I heard somewhere recently that nowadays slippers are often sold as 'indoor shoes'.  What's wrong with 'slippers'?  They do have all sorts of connotations, I suppose - old, comfy, staying in instead of going out, that kind of thing.  I am wearing slippers at the moment - oh, and pyjamas, ready for an early night.  I suppose pyjamas will soon be called something else.  I applaud a female friend of mine who went to the opera, wearing black silk pyjamas and a string of pearls.
