Why isn’t Serena Williams the world number? – Tennis Special
Analyzing the WTA Premier Rankings, the biggest question in the mind of tennis fans is that why Serena Williams is not the world number one? The American veteran secured the top spot in two Grand Slams this year i.e. the Wimbledon
Champions, the US Open, and a gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
According the 31-year-old Williams, "I say it because I believe it. And I believe Victoria feels the same way. I believe Maria feels the same way. I even feel Agnieszka (Radwanska) feels that way. They all say it. I wasn't saying
it to say I deserved to be No. 1, because if I deserved to be No. 1 maybe I would have done better in Paris, maybe I would have done better in Australia. I was just saying eventually I'll get there because I believe one day I'll get there. I believe with my
talent I can be there. That's what that's more or less about."
If we compare this to the “quality point” ranking system adopted by WTA in 2006, the players were awarded different points depending on the rank of their challengers, hence the bigger the rivals are, more points they bagged home.
Players received 143 for their opponents in the range of the top eight and 125 points for world number 50 to 75.
The greatest loss that the American suffered was due to the WTA ranking system being used as an indicator of players performance. It is simply the indicator of the number of rounds, the player has contested in but not how they
reach it. It really does not matter what kind of competitor the player faces but if you are able to win the contest, she snatch fixed number of points.
The old meter gave the tennis professionals a chance to display superior quality game but at the same juncture, it limits the scope of the average level performers. The contender with a large edge of quality scores showed that
the player has the spark to move forward.
Accordingly, to the quality point scoring system, it is evident that Williams shall top the list of tennis professionals. She had the best wins of the season, winning extra points for defeating the top class tennis stars. These
points show an average therefore; it gives an exact mileage to the players who participated in more tournaments and to those who played less.
The reigning world number one, Victoria Azarenka, shall rest on the number three position with 118.3-point average. The Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova, secures her world number two spot with 126.5, showing the great efforts she
has done. However, there is a great difference of the points between all the players.
The greatest jump was in the trend analysis of the American participant, Venus Williams, who is on world number 24 spot. Due to the impugnation of the current rules, the tennis fields have become less competitive than before, preventing
the winning scope for many deserving candidates.
