  1. Does it work properly if you hold the wire in tight?

This may sound stupid but try turning the network cable around.  Plug the end that's now in the router into your computer and the one that was in your computer into the router.  Sometimes it works on my laptop...I think it's how the ports are designed in newer laptops and some cheap cables aren't quite to spec don't always work if the ends were crimped too tight.

I'd bet your computer is fine and it's the cable just not quite right...but close enough it works sometimes.  This would also explain the IP address error, if a pin isn't making a good connection it wouldn' t get a DHCP response but would see something is plugged in.

  2. It has to be with the cord if they only turn on when you wiggle it. Try with your brothers.

As for the IP (network address for your computer) you can go into command prompt and type "ipconfig /renew" To renew your ip.

You can try pinging your brothers computer by typing ping 0.0.3.1 or your brothers ip address.

  3. something is broken if wiggling the lead changes what the lights do. Probably have pulled the cord too hard. This will need a replacement card.
