Why isnt my router working?

i want to be able to play on xbox live while my brother is on the computer so i bought a router and hooked it up to my modem and my xbox 360 but there is no connection to xbox live or the internet now what can i do

You need a special disk for xbox 360 to connect to internet if your using internet on computer that probably that thing computer working but xbox not that means need to buy cd if you don't understand me or don't know where buy CD  call the customer service for xbox they will help you out.
