  1. Could be several reasons:

    1) you do not have bipolar, or

    2) the medicine does not really work for bipolar, it is just that the pharmaceutical company wants to expand its market for a drug so where there is a will there is a way. The cheapest drug, that actually works is Lithium, but you really need on occassion to give your kidneys a break from having to process it. Also, you should try to operate on the lowest possible blood level that works.  Talk to your doctor.

Some of the newer treatments for bipolar promote diabetes or liver disease.

    3) maybe only a dosage adjustment is needed

  2. There are many, many meds out there, and often they are meds that are also used to treat other conditions, namely epilepsy.

I had to go through about 5 meds (each given 2 months to kick in) before I found one that fit me.  It was a very intense time, I was so tired of trying and it not working.

I finally found lamictal.  I know that each person is different, so there are many people out there that hate lamictal, but it has been a miracle drug for me.

Bipolar is a very real condition.  In fact, within the mental health community, bipolar is one of the only mental illnesses that are consistently accepted among almost all trained professionals (along with schizophrenia) as a very real condition that is primaily treated with medication.  The person that was extremely disrespectful to you and all people with bipolar is probably some ignorant christian fundamentalist that got lost on his way to the religion forum.  You have to learn to ignore them.

I know that this is a very frustrating process, but keep going. Bipolar meds are like soulmates.  You have to try a few really bad ones before you find the one for you.

I wish you all the luck in the world!

  3. Bipolar disorder is a made up condition. You are not bipolar. You need to exercise more and get into spirituality. Preferably Christianity. Bipolar is a theory made up by socialist atheists to explain spiritual shortcomings, stress, and confusion about life. The medicines are based on LSD research, yes acid, which attacks the neural synapses and also research into mind control drugs done by criminal scientists in n**i Germany. The drug industry that pushes this c**p is as happy to take your money for their experimental poison as any crack dealer out there. Yes, experimental is accurate. You are the guinea pig. Older versions of the drugs have been proved to cause severe harm to the body and mind. They only give you new unproven drugs that will be completely discredited through lawsuits in a few years.

  4. Antiepileptic Drugs, like those that are used to stop bipolar cycling can take up to two months to kick in. They have to change the metabolism in your brain through various mechanisms, and this is a slow process. Another possibility could be that you're on the wrong medicine, or wrong dosage of that medicine. Lithium has to be adjusted based on blood level, not how much of the drug you're actually taking. Other drugs include Depakote, Lamictal and Topamax, though there are many others that people have success with. Finding the right medicine is a trial and error process, and unfortunately there's not a good way to shortcut that.

Remember, keeping your bipolar cycling under control is one of the most important things you can do for your long term health. The more poorly under control your illness is, the more severe it tends to get as you age.
