  1. All cities in India have the same time zone i.e. Indian standard time (IST) which is UTC/GMT +5:30

to see the current local time in india check this:

  2. I don't think it is to simplify things as someone else said :D

I think India is not a very huge country as far as time difference in the places is considered.

    As per wikipedia ------

"Standard time zones can be defined by geometrically subdividing the Earth's spheroid into 24 lunes (wedge-shaped sections), bordered by meridians each 15° of longitude apart. The local time in neighbouring zones would differ by one hour. However, political and geographical practicalities can result in irregularly-shaped zones that follow political boundaries or that change their time seasonally (as with daylight saving time), as well as being subject to occasional redefinition as political conditions change."-------

And India is in fact quite irregular shaped and Gujrat and Assam are extreme west and extreme east respectively.

Longitude for Assam is about 95° E whereas for Gujrat its 72° E, it is more than 15, but this is the extreme difference. If you look at Rajasthan and Bengal, it will be just 13 degress. And again as Wiki says, whether this timezone change rule of 15deg will be followed also depends on the practicalitites involved.

So all over India there is only one time called as IST the indian standard time.

But if you look at indian lunar calendar, or "panchang" you will see difference in the sunrise and sunset timings in Gujraat and in Assam which are due to their geographical locations.

  3. In India, to simplify such a vast and populous country, they only use one time zone. Imagine the how much trouble the world biggest railway would have if they have to incorporate time zones?

So the time is the same in Andamans, as Kashmir as Gujarat and Assam.  The number of daylight hours will be shorter depending on the longitude, but no time change, only "India standard time."

For example the Indian Andamans are only 450km from Phuket Thailand but have a  two hour time difference.

  4. Although India is irregularly shaped and most of mainstream India does fall roughly under one timezone, there is no escaping the fact that Assam's timezone is too far to the east to justify imposing "IST" on it. Assam and Gujarat definitely are more than 1 (if not 2) timezone part.

The simple reason is: India is a developing country, and there is enough chaos as such without introducing "people adjusting their watches" into the mix. As anyone can tell, even in an advanced country like America, it imposes a "brain load" on people keeping up with timezones.
