  1. Because lunch time is hectic with a limited amount of time and kids are just starting to learn to drive ,this could lead to disaster under these kinds of time restraints!

  2. Campus = university?  So can't they make that choice?

Okay, if its school, stores don't want a bunch of kids in the stores milling around at lunch time.

Most kids that leave at lunch won't come back.

Its hard for the teachers supervising the kids to keep track of who is coming and going, and where- if a bunch of kids leave, the kid thats picked up by the predator may go unnoticed.

Where will the go?  What will they do?  Whats the neighbourhood like?  Who is responsable if they get hurt etc. off school grounds?  To many questions...

  3. They lack the responsibility to make intelligent decisions and would probably go to places to eat which do not serve good-tasting food.

  4. They might not come back.

  5. Staff thinks they wont come back. =P

  6. It's mainly because they're technically the school's responsibility (and liability) from the start of the school day until the dismissal bell so if they left and something happened to them, the school could get in trouble, be sued, etc.

Plus, many just wouldn't come back which would increase truancy and potentially lower grades, standardized test scores and graduation rates.

At the schools where I've taught, lunch is only 30 minutes.  If everyone left, there'd be no time to get somewhere, order, eat and get back safely anyhow.  It's just not feasible.

  7. Because they'll snort crack and get hit by cars duhhh.

  8. Because they're too immature, they drive badly, and they're more likely to get in trouble (a bunch of bored, horny, immature kids on the loose??? no thanks.)

  9. When they rush to get back in time, they often speed and it causes many accidents. Teenagers are known to be reckless drivers in general and get the most tickets around their highschools. If they are not in a car, the school may also be liable for anything that happens to the students because they are not within the parameters of the campus.

  10. Well since you put this question in the grade school category, I'm going to assume you mean grade school kids, and not high school. Kids that age should not be leaving campus because it is too easy for someone to mess with them..... kidnap, molest, whatever.  Kids that age also are not predictably reliable enough to be able to cross the street without supervision.  They also tend to lose track of time and would probably be late getting back to class.

  11. cause they can go do other stuff, they can get in an accident during school hours, schools might be held liable

  12. their are too many variables for you to be responsible for people leaving campus during lunch

  13. Because the school cafeteria would lose money.

  14. Well probably a lot don't come back or they go with friends and do drugs.

  15. Becouse teachers suck, and some kids don't know how to act,

  16. because they get into to much trouble.

they do things that they shouldnt be doing cause no ones around to supervise them.

  17. I remember in high school we had an open campus until 11th grade.  That year a group of 4 kids left to eat lunch at a nearby Burger King.  They stayed a little too late and were driving super fast around the corner, trying to make the yellow light so they would not be late for class.  They slid around the corner and into a semi that was waiting in the opposite lane from the one they were turning into.  3 of the kids died instantly, and girl that survived was paralyzed from the neck down.

I can understand why parents and teachers would prefer to have a closed campus, but I can also see that where one person makes a mistake, 9 others will not.  Again it falls to the parents to teach their children time management skills and responsibility behind the wheel.

  18. THEY SHOULD!

    no reason why they shouldn't

well actually there probably are some, but I think they should

    I'm guessing

-they can use drugs off campus

    -they can skip easier

    -they aren't supervised

You know, stupid stuff like that

  19. they can get hit by a car!

  20. neighborhood perverts looking for easy prey----you could get into trouble----or hurt--- and the school could be held responsible

  21. Depends on age. I feel that high school students SHOULD be able to. But I suppose some reasons not to would be safety and not returning in time for their next class.

  22. When they go to local businesses for lunch they go as a group and disturb other patrons.  They gather in front of businesses, which business owners do not like as it prevents their customers from entering their store.  It makes it easier for students to not return to school (skip afternoon classes).  The problem is if they were abducted or something happened to them no one would know where they were.  (The school has to keep track of them during the school hours.)  Also, lunch breaks are short, students have a tendency to return to their classes late after lunch.  There were all reasons why they banned students from leaving school during lunch when my son was in school.  (And for students who drive it causes a huge back up of cars leaving/coming back.)

  23. When they are at school, the school (teachers, administration) are responsible for them.  The school cannot watch them if they are off school property.  The students are minors...

  24. Schools are responsible for their students' safety during school hours.  If kids leave the campus, they could have an accident, be kidnapped, get into a fight, etc.  Schools not only want to protect their students from harm, but they want to protect themselves from lawsuits as well.

Also, some students might return to class late, disrupting class.  Some might not return at all.  And some may use drugs or alcohol while they're at lunch.  Keeping kids on campus will prevent some of those problems.

At some schools, certain students can apply for off campus lunch privileges.  They must have their parents' permission, maintain certain grades, and have a clean discipline record.   If they mess up, they lose their off campus lunch.

  25. A guy in my high school, drove to in n out burger in the next town (you can get there and back in 20 minutes if you speed). He did. He lived through the accident (he suffered very severe injuries including major injuries to his brain). but a few years later he killed himself (he was very sick, he was bi polar and schizophrenic after the accident).

There were other similar accidents but that one had the most impact.

So pressure to speed to make it back to campus in time.

  26. When you are at school. the school is legally in charge of you until school is over and done each and every day. So lets say you leave school and go to taco bell for lunch. If something were to happen to you if would be the schools falt and problem. They don't want to deal with sueing and things like that. cause if you killed for example its the school problem to deal with and they don't want that

  27. they are representing the school and often do a bad job at it. Kids can get up to things that leave the school liable for actions that happen. In the  school hours they are the responsibility of the school and if they get hurt off school grounds and don't know anything could happen

  28. I know a lot of kids get into car accidents by leaving for lunch... they might ditch the rest of their classes....

  29. Students are really irresponsible and not dedicated to the educational process, so why should they be aloud to go to lunch.  A couple of years ago during final exams the high school I went to decided to let students go to lunch. I think it was a very poor desicion that the school board had made because a student got pulled over and was caught on school grounds with drugs. Not only did that happen but a group of students got together and decided to get water guns and pee in them and go around in there car and shoot people with pee as they were walking they also destroyed peoples mail boxes by running over them also alot of student showed up late for there next class and some didnt show up at all. After that noone was aloud to go off campus.  They really shouldnt be allowed off school grounds because of the safty reasons. Leaving school grounds for lunch I think is not a good idea! Parents look to the school for safty and if students go to lunch you never know what could happen! If a group of friends all road together and got into a car accident i am pretty sure the parents would be upset with the school district for not paying close attention to the students!

  30. Because kids do stupid things when adults are not around.  However I disagree with the topic and think kids should be able to leave campus for lunch.

  31. at my school they allow it, there are like no rules. Sometimes kids just don't come back and skip classes like 30 times a year.
