Nature's Miracle Substance: Umbilical Cord Blood

Aimee Herd - John Mckenzie, Lenny Bourin – ABC News - (Jul 12, 2008)

It does not involve the killing of human embryos, and it has been used to treat over 60 diseases, including Leukemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and blood cancers. Umbilical cord blood contains wonder-working stem cells. But all too often this "miracle substance" is simply disposed of.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Shpall, head of the M.D. Anderson Cord Blood Bank, it is still a "vast majority" of women who do not realize what they are allowing to be thrown away when they don't allocate their newborn's umbilical cord blood to be donated. Yet, this wonderfully stem-cell-rich substance has been used to successfully treat so many diseases

Many pregnant women are simply not aware of the medical value and the opportunity for treatments that can come from donating the cord blood when their baby is born.

The fact is, umbilical cord blood is the perfect supply of stem cells OK?

  1. uhm....i'm not sure what the question is...I can tell you that as a pregnant woman I have been made well aware of the wonderful things that cord blood banking can do....unfortunately, I cannot afford the yearly costs of banking. If donation is available, I will happily donate when my baby is born.

  2. I actually did my stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) last year using cord blood.  I have a rare tissue type and had not matching relatives or matches in the marrow registry.  Since cord blood does not have to be matched as closely (peripheral blood stem cells or marrow need to be 10/10 or 9/10 match, and I used two different cord blood units that were perfect matches to each other but only 6/10 match to me) I was able to use cord blood for my transplant.

And you are correct in that most women do not even have a clue they can donate or bank it.

Some states, such as where I grew up in WV, does not even have any hospitals set up to accept cord blood donations and no public or private cord blood banks.

And some people still think cord blood is the same as an aborted fetus.  I have people telling me on a regular basis that I killed a baby to live and that I deserve to go to h**l.

  3. Mini Me's awesome, leave him alone!

He may be short, and cant speak, but he's better than Dr. Evil...
