Because the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Elam(LTTE) couldn't tolerate the Rajiv's vow to eradicate the problems from Jaffna Island. The Sri Lankan government asked the Indian government to go to joint war against LTTE, which was never an Indian policy (to go to war with any country). The South Indian people harboured the LTTE people because empathize with them. Rajiv(who was the only daring and forward looking PM India ever had) died because of state organized murder.

IT was found that there were no politicians involved in killing Rajiv Gandhi, The Indian politicians wanted to take benefit of sympathy to win the elections and ignored the warning that was given by Indian intelligence agency. He was assassinated as he insulted LTTE. According to Indian Law those who were involved in criminal acts should be punished. And the Indian police did it, but there were only able to arrest the killers but not the person who appointed to do it, as Mr. Prabhakaran is not an easy person to catch hold of. He is still in the India's Most Wanted List.
