  1. I guess some call it that because they feel trapped.

I feel it's a relationship, which my husband and I have. I love being married.

  2. People often refer to it as such because both in institution and marriage one has to be committed to it.  It makes one feel trapped, smothered, and like you want to break free.

I personally do not view marriage in this way.  I think it is all a matter of perspective.  It's like viewing the glass as half empty or half full.  One will only get as much out of something as they are willing to put into it.  In an institution most of the people don't have to do anything except be unable to cope with life in a function that is healthy for themselves and others...this makes the person "unavailable"   Marriage, on the other hand should be something that both people participate in and grow together.

Life is always how you see it.  If one sees marriage as an institution then one might want to fight to get out but if one sees marriage as a place to be nurtured, be loved, and grow in ways that you never thought possible then your life will be richer and full of happiness.

    Just my opinion

  3. They call it a "ball and chain" too.  Have you ever been married?

  4. It is called an "institution" because one of the definitions of institution is "a well-established and structured pattern of behavior or of relationships that is accepted as a fundamental part of a culture, as marriage."
