Why men mostly wear shirts and shorts in doing sports but women wear bikinis?

I suppose the athletes have a choice, though. After all, some girls' outfits are skimpier than others'.

As someone else said, s*x sells. And, although people won't always admit it, there is still a lot of sexism surrounding women in sports (some fair, some unfair). Basically, to make money and keep the sport going they make the athletes look s**y. Notice that women's sports in which the athletes aren't percieved of as "s**y" don't do well commercially and, thus, fail in the long run (or disappear into obscurity).

Because every sport has conditions on what a competitors uniform must look like.

In beach volleyball for example, a competitor is only allowed to wear a bikini or a one piece bathing suit. There are even limitations on how big the bikini is allowed to be (max 7 centimeters at the waist).
