Question:

Why might a TI-83 Plus graphing calculator suddenly stop working?

I was using my TI-83 Plus graphing calculator when all of the sudden it turned itself off without even warning me of low batteries. It wouldn't turn back on so I tried replacing the batteries to no avail. Is there any reason why my calculator might have suddenly stopped working? Any suggestions to fix it?

Thanks for your help. :)

  1. Something similar happened to me one time and it turned out that I accidentally turned the contrast down so low that it appeared the calculator was off when in fact it was on.  This is actually an easier mistake to make than one might think.  All you would have to have done is press the yellow 2nd key and then press and hold the down arrow.  If this is the problem, then all you need to do to fix it is press the yellow 2nd key followed by the up arrow.  Repeat these two steps until the writing becomes dark enough to see.

    I hope this helps!

  2. Did you change the backup battery?

If it has shorted or been doused in water, it'll shut down for good.

If you're savvy enough, open it up and check for water damage. A hair dryer on low cool might help if it is.
