  1. Seeds will germinate when exposed to moisture and light at the right temperature (which will be above freezing).  Consequently, storing seeds in a moisture free, very cold environment allows for long term storage and study of the plant at a later time.  Also,  some plant species require the seed to be exposed to very cold temperature before they can break dormancy and germinate when conditions are correct.
