Why might the range not be the best estimate of variability/dispersion?

  1. The range is extremely sensitive to outliers. If say you have a set of data:

    1, 5,5,5,5,5,5,5,5,6,6,6,7,7,7,7,7,7,7, 371

    Although the data is pretty well concentrated towards 6, the range would be 370 which would suggest heavy dispersion.
