Why most radio stations only play music from big name, celebrity artists?

Actually they play what is usually popular which almost always is big name celebrity artists.

Pretty much record companies and sites such as I-tunes promote the artists, and from what people make popular is what gets on air.

Actually most radio stations in bigger cities let smaller market stations (and big market stations that do take risks on unproven artists) debut the newer songs and take the risks so what you hear has basically been popular in other areas for a while before you hear them.

Radio Is a business and taking a chance on unproven can have a listener tune to another station and takes more to get them to switch back.

That's why stations with no local competition in that music and the college stations usually debut the new stuff first..

Advertisers only advertise on stations that  attract the type of customer the advertiser is targeting., So the station will only play the most popular songs in the stations format. that the music director approves.advertisers want to be on stations with the most listeners , playing the most popular music in that stations format. because major labels have the money to push the artist with radio promotion they are given much more priority over indie music... even when the indie music is superior to the major label music.... it's a big catch 22

look if you are sick of the music industry @$$clowns telling you what is cool, you should try to listen to your local college radio station. Cause they play alot different styles of music and a lot of local bands.

Many years ago, there was a HUGE scandal between the radio stations and the record companies. The record companies were paying the stations and the disc jockies to play the music from certain artists.

Congress held hearings and discovered what was going on. HUGE fines were levied against everyone involved. A few folks went to jail.

I THINK its because that music gets the most exposure on many other stations throughout the country.

The CD & recording companies are ALWAYS doing polls and surveys. As sopon as a particular artist or style "falls from grace", they have other artists to pick-up the slack and generate more income for the station and the companies!

most do but Australian Internet Radio ...www.australianinternetradio.com.   plays music from the 1950's till today..lots of songs that radio does not play and lots of new artists ..always Australian ...and no adds ...just the music...
