  1. He must think outside the box.

  2. If a psychologist is not creative, (and many of them are not), they will try to fit the client into their existing theories, ideas and treatments, rather than be open to seeing people and situations in a new light and be flexible in developing treatment.

Existing psychological treatments are sometimes effective but there is sooo much room for improvement. A good psychologist must be willing to challenge everything they think they know and be willing to learn, and within the confines of ethics, be willing to experiment.

  3. Do they have to be? I'm not sure that they have to be. Although, being a creative psychologist would help them relate to people better. A non-creative person wouldn't be able to put themselves in another person shoes as well as a creative one.

  4. I think that a psychologist needs to be creative, because everyone is so different, what may work for one client and reach the core of their problems, may not work for another.

They need a lot of "tools" in their tool belt, or everyone will be hit with a hammer, and they may not be a nail...if you know what I mean...

So thinking creatively is a great asset when treating clients.
