  1. to produce a haploid (n) gamete from a diploid (2n) precursor cell. that way when two individuals mate the two haploid gametes produce a diploid organism. if meiosis did not occur, each generation would produce successively polyploid (more than 2n) genomes ie 2n + 2n = 4n, then 4n+4n=8n and so on.
