Why must we have a Top 8 for the Finals?

OK, more money. OK, showcase interstate sides that are not good enough for the Top 4. But aside from that, everyone says that positions 5 to 8 have no chance, so why bother? Lets revert to Top 4.

  1. I know, we should have a top 16.

    like

    1 vs 2

3 vs 4 and etc, the top 8 gets a life and the bottom 8 if they lose they are OUT

  2. Top 4, how boring. Leave it the way it is, Plus there will be another 2 teams soon and a top 8 with a league of 18 will be good. Also its only a matter of time before a team who finishes 7th or 8th wins the Flag.

  3. The reason why we have a top 8 is so that Richmond can finish 9th every second year and get excited about there prospect of playing in the finals!! LOL

  4. You really are a tool!! Please refer to to Lozz' comments and add these to them.

Have you forgotten the domination of the interstate clubs in recent years? I know, benefits of the fl handouts blah blah blah. Get over it, move with the times and realise that it is now the AFL not VFL.

All about money? - EVERYTHING is all about money. Nothing happens without money. Clubs would disappear without it. Stadiums don't get built or upgraded without it. Players don't get paid without it.  The game won't get promoted to remote areas without it. DEAL WITH IT.

So sick of interstate club bashing.......

    EDIT: Always a pleasure...lol

  5. A top 16!??? At least then Fremantle could say they're in the finals!

Hang on. There's gonna be 17 teams isn't there? Never mind.

  6. I think you need to take a visit down memory lane and realise that ANYONE in the top 8 can win a GF!  PLUS, the 'interstate sides' have dominated the Top 4 & 8 in the past 6 years!!

Collingwood were one game away from being in the GF and they finished 6th or something....

  7. Well I think there should be maybe a Top 6 and yes it is all about getting those people through the gates.  Hey imagine - Shock Horror!! - if the team who finishes top just gets the Cup for finishing top and whoever finishes down on the bottom gets relegated to a lower comp. as well as the wooden spoon.  Oh that would be great and certain teams wouldn't then try to finish on the bottom as may have happened before???? to get draft picks etc.  Also in a perfect world No team would get any sort of advantage playing the Grand Final on the MCG where they get lotsa games there during the season and so have better knowledge of that ground but all this is wishful thinking.  Re money matters and finals watch out it could be worse.  One day they might have a top 12 participating in finals.

  8. wow whats with the interstate bashing here? i mean, it was only 2 years ago that the interstate teams were DOMINATING the AFL. and now the cats have finally won a cup, you're telling the interstaters to p**s off.

1998, Adelaide Crows an INTERSTATE SIDE, finished 5th on the ladder before the finals started, and they were able to win.

  9. No way!

Adelaide won the premiership after finishing fifth on the ladder. Collingwood nearly made the granny last year and they didn't finish top four!

Many sides perform differently when they play finals, and while some don't perform well, others play very well under finals conditions. And it would give so many teams nothing to play for in the second half of the season.

How boring would this season be, if there was only a top four? We already know who is going to take those positions. The second half of the eight is where all the excitement is this season!

  10. Top four will do me.

Why do people refer to teams not in Vic as "interstate teams". Do you think the universe revolves around Melbourne? That is a term reserved for Melbournians!!

Do people in Adelaide refer to all other teams - bar the Crows & Port, as "interstate teams"? No, they don't. neither do the Q'landers, N S Welshmen or Sandgropers.

You'll always be poor cousins while you have that attitude.

I would plug for a top 10 this year as that's about where the Pies will finish.

  11. **Teams that finish 5 - 8 mightn't have a great chance of making the Grand Final but they do have a big say in who DOES make it by playing teams during the finals.

Could you imagine how boring the season would be this year if we were only having a top four - there'd only really be one place (4th) that teams would be competiting for.**

  12. secral reasons

    1) so players are actually playing for something/ hava a goal

    2) makes the season more competitive

    3) crowds and money

    4) to reward the best teams through out the season

and in 2005 when the tigers won the premiership they wernt in the top 4
