  1. Is there a reason why your son's dentist didn't want to remove the teeth? I was in the same situation as your son when I was about his age, and my dentist sent me to an orthodontist for a second opinion (he wanted to remove the teeth, but wanted to get another opinion first). To help explain my answer I'll tell you what my teeth were like:

Right from my first dentist appointment as a child, my dentist knew I had WAY too many teeth. I was 9 years old when I was sent to an orthodontist for the second opinion. Between the ages of 9 and 11 I had 15 teeth pulled (and that's not counting the 6 teeth I pulled myself just like any other kid). I now (at 19 years old) have 24 teeth (12 on top, 12 on the bottom) and had my four wisdom teeth pulled as well. I'm missing four regular teeth now (and 4 wisdom teeth) because I have a small jaw and also because the teeth had to be pulled because of their location. And as for the braces, my dentist was hoping that the tooth extractions would prevent me from needing braces, but it didn't (but that was partly due to my overbite as well)....It did however give me a few more years so I didn't need them so young. I got braces put on when I was 16 1/2 and I've had them for 2 1/2 years (getting them off next weekend, actually).

Sorry for my extremely long answer, but to sum it up: I'd suggest getting a second opinion to see if he may need some teeth pulled.
