  1. Sounds like an internal component failure on your TV or internal component failure on your output device going to the TV.  If you've got multiple output devices (VCR, DVD, Cable/Satellite, etc) you can determine which one is faulty.  

    The S-video signal path is different from composite, and is a higher quality signal as well.  Your problem is not rare.
