The motor is getting hot but the vacuum (Panasonic model MCV5720 upright) doesn't pick up when I move the vacuum over the carpet.

  1. check to see if it is clogged somewhere

  2. There's probably a clog in the tube in the bottom of the vacuum. Remove the bottom plate ( should be 4 Phillips head screws) and the roller brush and you'll see the hole for the tube that goes from there to the bag or tank. You can stick a wire clothes hanger in there to either poke the clog through or grab it and pull it out.

  3. the area before the hose can get plugged with vacuumed debris.  look underneath into the hole the junk goes into to get in the hose.  good luck.

  4. That means the bottom of the vacuum is clogged. Open up the bottom and clean it out.

  5. sounds like a the belt is broken.

if you look turn on the vacuum and tilt with the handle locked in the upright position, you should see a brush tube.. if that brush is not spinning then the belt is broken and it wont vacuum... with the  vacuum off and unplugged remove the screws that hold the bottom plate and you will see the broken belt and you should be able to tell where it should go.
