I have seen in numerous videos on youtube and other sources videos of the SBS (special boat service) in what looks like very unkempt civilian clothing, I (personally) couldn't see any bullet proof clothing

  1. 1st of all nothing is truly 'bullet proof' as much as it is 'bullet resistance' for example a level IIIA vest will protect you (once!) from a M43 7.62 x39mm (Russian) bullet strike however M80/M82 7.62 x51mm (NATO) will slice right into the same class vest.  Even when the vest protects you from penetration you will still suffer trauma from the kinetic energy transfer that occurs when the bullet strikes which can break ribs or create other bunt force traumas.

2nd; As in the case of the SAS and other allied special operatives, they seek to blend into the local environment so they will be confuse their enemy that they are local irregular forces.  The type of uniformity and protection you're suggesting will only serve to identify them at a distance making infiltration of rear area extremely difficult.

3rd; Following insertion into a hostile rear area the SAS like any other allied special operatives are nothing more that 'light infantry', very well trained and capable, however very exposed.  They depend on their ability for rapid movement by foot in order to extrigate themselves out of bad situations.  The protection of soft body armor is relatively meanless in these type of situations and if you have to carry a load it should be limited to communications equipment, weapons, ammunition, food and water....

  2. Bullet proof clothing is expensive, heavy and not very flexible. There are some new types that have come onto the market but acquisitions for a large bureaucracy like the military take a long time.

HOWEVER there are some amazing new fabrics right around the corner. For example, one made from spider web fabrics that is stronger then steel yet lighter than silk.... that will be a real bullet proof shirt
