Why not dig silt from the river bottom to prevend flooting and use the silt for dikes?

every year we have so much flooting,why not dig the silt from the river bottom to give more room for the water and use the silt for bilding dikes along the shores

  1. I'm guessing you mean flooding - and yes, why not?  It seems a feasible thing to do and at the same time you will be making the dikes deeper.  That can't be a bad thing either.

I am not sure where you live but I do know that most areas that flood annually have ecosystems that have evolved and depend on the annual flooding cycle.  Digging the silt from the river bottom and buildling dikes completely changes the ecosystem of both the fresh water and the adjacent lands.  Of course similar things are done all the time (channelizing rivers) however I just wanted to point out that their is a lot of thinking about the impacts of what seems to be a simple fix on the ecosystems.

  3. I agree with the natural flooding cycles above.

    In addition, river bottoms are an ecosystem too. Depending on the location of the river, you may be destroying vital habitat.

    also depending on location, if the river is polluted, you may be releasing lots of toxic chemicals that have been buried in the sediment.
