Why don't cities think about putting manholes on the sidewalk instead of the road. If that were the case cars wouldn't have to avoid them while driving.

  1. Why not put a brain in your head? Geez, they don't bug any car unless they were put in wrong.

  2. I think it's for convenience.  I'm not sure of your location, but in Nebraska they're usually centered in the lane so when you drive over them it goes underneath the center of the vehicle and you don't have to steer around it to avoid having your tires hit it.  If they were put into sidewalks, that may become an annoyance for bicyclists or pedestrians to cross over, as they have ridges or are uneven with the pavement.  Also, since manholes are access points to sewer systems, they have more room to park maintenance trucks around them.

  3. cars dont have to avoid them they are as flat as the road. and it would be kinda hard to get down into them if their was a crowd of people aroud it, also if there is a problem in the sewers and they need machinery to fiz it they cant drive it across the sidewalks....the road is just more practical.

  4. lol, cars DON'T  have to! skateboarders and rollerbladers do!

  5. They put the drains in the streets because it does not interfere with other lines under the sidewalks.

  6. Because in most cities the Gas & water lines are under the sidewalks. The sewer lines run down the middle of the street, not under the sidewalk.
