Why not use chain gangs again?

Why can't we have prisoners do a lot of the work that Illegal aliens are coming to the USA to do . Things such as picking crops out in the fields. They are being punished. Why not get free labor from them. Maybe then they would be to tired to cause trouble in the prisons.

Here they do work, and its about 113 degrees out :) i think they deserve it. They dont pick crops but they do clean up the area VERY good

I drove through W Virginia last summer and saw a group of prisoners in orange doing roadwork.

Down in AZ there's a mayor or someone who has a "Tent ctiy" out in the desert for inmates.  They get a baloney sandwich and water in the morning and about the same at night. And they work hard. The guy running the program says,"if it's good enough for our soldiers, it's good enough for them."  

I'm all in favor of hard labor. If they live, they live. If they don't they don't. But what I am not in favor of is working them which would take a job from someone else.

we do. here in north carolina inmates do a lot of work. picking up roadside trash, clearing right of ways with bushaxes and slingblades and other projects considered lower work than many spoiled kids are too good to do. and the inmates do great work too. it is a huge help to the county and makes our area look nice for people traveling thru.

That sounds very intelligent, and it's a great idea. Besides, I miss seeing the old chain gangs and the guards with the shotguns out on the highway.

Chain Gangs were used to keep a group of prisoners together to prevent escape.  It is extremely unproductive to have people chained together to work.  They have no freedom of movement.  Just keep them locked in the yard if they are that dangerous.

some places do use prisoners to do grunge work...but the county or state has to have a contract with each other. when I was in trouble I was sentenced to two work week-ends- that consisted of showing up with other 'bad people' and they transported us to the neighboring towns water works place where we had to clear all the brush and weeds from the fence lines

Probably because the prisoners have "rights" after all.  So what if they've committed crimes, they still deserve to be treated well.  They need their rest, hot meals, fitness, recreation, access to media and television too -- not to mention access to the library where they can learn to file their appeals.  When can we expect them to fit work in too?  Come one, that's asking for way too much of these poor individuals.
