Damned if I know...I see people hang everything from baby shoes to stuffed animals from their rearview mirrors! It's annoying to real drivers, because it's a distraction; everytime the stupid things move, it takes your peripheral attention off the road...I've had GF's get really angry when I rip them off the stalk while I'm driving!

I think you'll find that this is a poor attempt at reflecting light into speed cameras in order to dodge a few hefty fines.

It allegedly causes refraction of the rays when a speed gun is "fired" at the car. However, most guns are apparently pointed at the front number plate or at the car roof. To have any hope of this working you would need to cover the whole frontal area of the car with CDs !!

It started way back in the 80 when CD were the new (and expensive) thing.

then when AOL started sending FREE cd's lots of ghetto kids started doing it.

Its an urban myth that they will blind the speed cameras,and so allow you to speed through built up areas and past schools......d***heads!

I remember doing this back in 1990/1991...my reason for doing so?

I thought it looked cool. Nothing more.

Why a CD, though? This was back in the day when a lot of females were hanging these small crystals, or suncatchers from THEIR rearview mirrors. I wanted to one-up them, so opted to use a defective CD because it caught the sunlight just as well. (Oh the things we thought were "cool" back then....lol).

Course, after a police officer told me that it was illegal to have something hanging from the rearview mirror (as it obstructs the drivers vision), I removed it.

they think it blocks the speed guns, you know, the things they use to see if you are speeding. They are wrong.

To say to the people behind them, "HEY! HEY!! LOOK AT ME!!! I'M SHINY, AND I CAN REFLECT LIGHT INTO YOUR EYES, MAYBE BLINDING YOU!!", and neons are illegal (unless you're standing still I've heard)
