We love it. Two flies crawling up a wall, cockroach racing, rooster fighting, glass half full or half empty whcih cup has the ball- we just can't get enough!

Even in Islamic countries- although the authorities hate it (real motivation is no taxable revenue)- it's as omnipresent as under counter porno DVDs about Saudi housewives gone wild.

For the pedants and the melancholics- I'm referring to the fun, harmless jovial petty-cash gambling where no-one gets killed, looses organs or commits abuses.

Why do you think this amusing pan-human phenomen exists?

What on earth triggered us humans to do such a thing? Is it a game of dominance or pecking order one-upmanship?

It is a question of 'What is your opinion worth?

Everyone has an opinion of certain outcomes, and most men believe their opinion is better than the next man's.  It is a macho look to say 'I understand the way of the world better than the next man, so I should be able to profit by this.

For the more experienced gamble who has got over this stupid outlook, gambling becomes a science, like physics and mathmatics.  Each person will be looking for their own secret winning formulae(philosophy).  They create a world of laws (do's and don'ts) in order to make their betting bank grow and flourish.

The third stage is when  all the order found in your laws still don't mean you are guaranteed to succeed, you then realise that we live in a chaotic universe and where no outcome can be known. Thus you become your own bookmaker and start to profit from the reckless betting of the inexperienced and self opinionated macho types  ( well thats my plan)

Still it is better past time than killing each other in wars and petty arguments.

There is another reason which may apply to some, to gamble is to see if you are blessed by the divine, whether it be lady luck, god or whatever your belief is, even a fourleaf clover.  When you win you feel the whole universe is on your side, when you lose you realise how small and insignificant you really are.  Thus my God is the great bookmaker in the sky, he raises up the lowly and humbles the over confident, he makes winners and losers of us all.  To his followers he makes a great rollercoaster of a ride through life with all its highs and lows.

the adrenalin rush is probably a pretty big factor. but it also shows who's 'better.' and with animals, the better male gets the mate. maybe they are just trying to get girls. lol. its sort of a form of competition, and guys love competition.

firstly , it doesn't apply to everyone.

But many like because being the bread giver they got some money and always hope for more money ....

its a lot of things, some are the adreiline rush, the urge to act crazy, and mostly its a get together with the other guys which makes you feel really cool.
