  1. OpenOffice.org is legally freeware. That means that no-one can stop any user from giving away or selling this software, provided they follow some very simple procedures. This is necessary to assure that regardless of what Sun might eventually want, OpenOffice and all code within it remains free, and that any party anywhere can produce a forked version of it if they wish. There are at least three forked versions available now under Windows.

However this means that unscrupulous parties can also legally sell OpenOffice.org and other free software for whatever price they think they can get for it. OpalOffice was one of the parties that was doing this, and not providing anything for their money, so far as I know, that you can’t get free direct from the OpenOffice webstite at http://www.openoffice.org/. It seems to have been one of the most prominent of such sellers.

Check [OpalOffice] in Google. The site itself seems to be gone now, but it may resurface under a different name. It may already have done so.

So be warned. Before you buy any software, check its name on the web and see if the software is not also available for free, or whether there are many comments about problems with the software.

Note that OpenOffice.org as an organization gets no funds whatsoever from giving away the product. It get funds only from Sun Microsystems and donations from other supporters of free software.

  2. Everyone seems to choose OpalOffice these days. /
