Why or why not is monarchy and royalty antiquated?

Perhaps, Patrick, but what if the monarch is an ignorant wastrel slob? Do we get to kill them? I heard in Prague that every once in a while they used to throw incompetent or corrupt monarchs from the top of Prague castle. Sounds like fun, but the Czechs aren't the most powerful nation in the world, so did it really help cull the stupidity out of royalty? In other words, it sounds quaint to claim the monarch knows best, but who QC's the monarch? Seeing some reality TV shows, it's notable possible for a whole family of stupid. It's also ironic for an autocratic dictator monarch to be running a meritocracy. In fact, it makes no sense unless you're just lucky with your dice roll on monarchs. Then there's the whole inbreeding thing that doesn't lead to much confidence on the dice roll part...

Monarchy is far from antiquated because modern society has proven democracy is not always the best choice.

Hence why George Bush got voted into office TWICE. Look where THAT got us.

A monarch is a focal point for a country. He (or she) is a national leader, a person to look for in times of crisis.

People can vote for their leaders. So what? Often times they either don't vote at all because they're too busy reading Star Magazine articles about "celeb baby bumps" or watching sports on TV to care about anything serious in the world. The rest simply don't know anything about politics.

Electoral democracy is not without its merits but I'd argue many people need a King or Queen to not just reign over them, but RULE over them and make sure their lives and the country is in fine working order, not leave it up to ignorant slobs to vote for whichever corrupt politician they happen to have similar opinions to.

It's an antiquated system for several reasons:

1) it's a lot harder now to convince a whole country of people that God personally chose an individual to lead them with absoulte authority.

2) The methods a kiing or queen might be inclined to use to silence their opposers would appear all over youtube and spark a revolution almost instantly.

3) people like to have a say in what their country is doing.
