  1. Since having my son 4 1/2 yrs ago. I have met many parents of kids with down syndrome, and even on Yahoo answers I have come to know quite a few parents from all around the world who have a child with DS....We do NOT hide our children.....we are PROUD of our children! We know the obstacles our kids have overcome in their lives...whether it is developmentally, or how society views our kids... and yet they persevere.  from my own experiences I have never met a parent who was ''ashamed'' of their child, because we do not see our kids as ''down syndrome kids" they are not defined by what they have...our kids are just that....our kids! no one, and I mean no one, can answer this question unless they are a parent (or family member) of a child with down syndrome or in a field that works with special needs kids....the ''general public'' for the most part has their own misconceptions....fear...and ignorance.

you asked what kind of education helps kids with DS grow up successfully?  there are many programs out there to help (especially in the States)  Early Intervention helps young children with therapies such as occupational, physical, speech and special education from birth until 3 yrs old. early childhood preschool from 3 yrs until they are ready to begin school continues that education.  But it is also important that parents continue this when their child is at home.  There are special schools, or a child could be mainstreamed into the school system and with help from a special education teacher they learn everything "typical" kids learn. you can't lump all kids with down syndrome the same.  each and every one of them is their own person and learns at their own level.

Parents like me chose to go down a different road than most parents....we would stop at nothing to provide the best for our kids.

  3. 1)Why parent hide their down syndrome kids?

Most parents feel SHAME to have DS kids. Hiding the kid is in DENIAL,  if they do NOT exist; then parents have NO problem.

2)What education help down syndrome kids grow up successfully?

DS' function varies. General speaking, they learn SLOWLY.  Special education helps... Kids can be very passionate or patient. Teach them ASAP.

  4. Parents may hide their DS children because they are uninformed and are embarrassed that they may have caused it to happen.  Some parents just aren't prepared mentally to raise a child with a disability, but as they become more accepting of the situation, I would hope that the parents would warm up and help their child live life to the fullest despite the condition.  Enrolling DS children in a public education system can work wonders on them.  I worked in special education for awhile and had DS students.  They love to take on responsibilies and be rewarded for day to day goals such as helping in the cafeteria and being an assistant to the teacher. Students in the mainstream classrooms would even high-five my students in the halls, so it is important that the school they are in values and cherished ALL students and demands that they are treated equally.
