If you are not a tournament level player.

I can see buying a program if you are good enough.

Gnuchess (comes free with winboard) is free. No strings.

If you are a beginner, why would you pay?

  1. Playing against a program which can tell you when you're going wrong, will help you to improve your game.

If you make a bad move when playing against Fritz, it will always tell you.

  2. Because the tutorials in ChessMaster are pretty d**n good for beginners.

    ChessMaster definitely improved my game.

  3. Thanks, I'll try it!
