Because the total cost of the studies as well as cost of living in Australia is not as much as in the U.S. Since the Aus$ is less than US$ in value,the cost is more affordable by many students who want to study abroad.Also,admission to the Australian universities require only IELTS as a prerequisite,which is for English requirements,unlike Us where GRE/GMAT/SAT is a must for applying for admission.Since the procedures and requirements are also easy and job prospects as well as living conditions are flourishing in Aus,People are preferring it.

Probably a combination of the quality of the education, the reputation and the price. Although with the currency the way it is now it's not that cheap anymore for overseas students, it's still probably alot cheaper than studying in the USA and of more relevance for people who want to work in the English speaking word from other Asian countries.
