  1. Because by tradition and law the pilot has the final responsibility for the safety of the aircraft, crew, and passengers, much as a ship captain has the final word on nautical vessels.


  2. Becase if they asked the AME and aeronautical engineers  to work for the compensation that they ask of the pilots and told them that they shared the same responsibility for life and death they would not do their job.
