I think people cut themselves for many reasons, one being for attention.  Especially those who proudly and publicly label themselves "cutters".  Or they think it's cool.  Others do it out of anger and feel the need to punish themselves.   Also, I've heard people say that it's a release or a reminder of being alive.   And last, I've heard people say they just like blood.

Cutting is a coping mechanism. There is a temporary adrenaline rush from the pain. People do it because of that and they do it because they are suffering inside and want to feel something. Some do it as a cry for help. Some do it as a purge. Some do it as a part of their culture. Eventually, it becomes addictive and as difficult to stop as any addiction.

Please, please do not start cutting.

Please don't judge those who do either. They are hurting emotionally and don't need that.

Some people find it easier to deal with physical pain rather than emotional pain.

Also, people who feel dead inside cut to make themselves feel alive, sometimes even to prove it. Cutting is a specific kind of self harm, and people can find many ways to relieve the pain they feel inside.

eleve it or not there is an OCD with these people. easier then dealing with the emotional? pain is pain an this acontrol-ablee b pain, how deep , how long, how paInful. but there are treatments for this, i would stay away from pills but lean toward action andrethoughtt patterns to lesson the desire to cut themselves. in either case seek help or have your friend seek help or whoever this related too.

d**n please stop asking questions like this it makes like almost know sense! I get that your curios! but you guys who don't cut them selves will never understand  AND LISTEN! pepole do this to take away pain in there

life. Ok so pretend your eating candy right and you want to stop but you really want to keep eating. Its kinda hard to explain but pepole who cut them selves enjoy it cause they would rather feel anything els but pain!

Someone HAS to have a reason to cutting them selves! like child abuse, raped,living in bad *** environment,mom is a drug attic, dad is an drug attic,OTHERS!!!!!! so mush more! :)

I know several people who cut and I think I may know why.  They think that their life sucks and no one understands them.  They basically want to be "someone else" but don't know how to achieve this.  For the most part these people are totally misunderstood by most regular people.  Just because you cut doesn't mean you are suicidal or violent.  It just means you want the "pain" to go away.  If you do want to cut yourself, try not to.  Well it may feel good for a little bit, it really doesn't solve anything.

I used to cut myself in H.S and I had many reasons:

I was tired of people telling me I was a freak/ugly etc-so, I cut myself to show them how ugly I could really be.

I hated my home life and was so depressed and too young for a professional tattoo

It reminded me that it hurts to be alive sometimes

I never really tried to 'show it off' except for the one time the cheerleaders were giving me $hit and showed them my giant scar.
