  1. You know, of course, that the barrels are supposed to stand still.  It's the horse (and its girl) that do the racing.

I love to watch the horse taking part, shifting legs in making a 90 degree turn. You can see the horse watching and looking, really paying attention (and analyzing).

And it's amazing to watch the physics: like a speed skater, the horse is lying way out close to the ground in making the turn.

And to see the horse pick up speed for the finish line. You can see and feel the competition, the urge to do really well.

The rider has trained horse well, and the two work well together.

At our county rodeo we watched a child big enough to sit in the saddle, urging a big horse around barrels.  Horse was going a little faster than a walk.

I found it touching, tradition being carried on, parents proud or wouldn't have let child enter, and horse's care for (or indifference to) the rider.  When they crossed the line, got a nice hand.

It's not just a competition made up, but a practice of  the skill needed to follow a running and twisting cow in open, but  dotted with brush and rocks, country.  The horse almost does more of the roping, in that case.

  2. I don't know

    I dislike it

most need how to ride and most use tie downs or gagbits and I REALLY do not agree with barrel racing

if they learned more ,ya ."Great I would love the sport

When I was running we NEVER HAVE 2D 3D 4D

ALL WE HAD was the fastest ..

Go figure ,, if they only took  more time other then

Whip ,spur  turn , I would have lots more respect ,,

But slowly they are learning more and now many run in Snaffles instead of gag bits.and tie downs and spurs ......

. I praise those people,, Keep up learning
