The above user made some very good points. SRK specifically said that he wants Ganguly to be the captain of his team. Also Ganguly, as a former Indian captain, and a local demi-god, will get the crowd's backing much more easily than Ponting.

As a Calcuttan I can tell you that some of the locals would thrash you verbally if you were to ask this same question on the streets. Ganguly is a man who's worshipped here...literally whereas Ponting was vilified after the recently concluded India-Australia series.

The team management would be mad to make Ponting captain after this.

No its not wrong . As its an Indian team first of all , second reason - Dada's home town, third - preference should be given to indians why an outsider should be made the captain? , Fourth - he also plays not better than but as good as ponting Fifth - money might be playing a g8 role here.

1) Dada is an Indian and hence he knows Indian pitches/atmosphere better than Ponting

2) He is good friend of owner of the team

3) People want to see local hero(indian) as leader of team, so that they will support his team. You know IPL runs on money, if people would not support any particular team. That team will Not get much sponsorship .

No, it's not. Sourav Ganguly's hometown is Kolkata. He is well loved here, and the people want to see their local man as the captain of the team of their city, and not a foreign player. Besides, Ganguly is as good as Ponting, both as a skipper, and as a cricketer, and dada is definitely much better than Punter as a person.
