the same reason its high anywhere else...financial reforms and corporate ownership take its vast resources into themselves.

Leadership is established to help the process at the expense of the people.

Compare the money-lending world with the borrowing world and this should come into pretty sharp focus.

Their infrastructure would be just fine if it had the benefit of the country's own resources.

well all the other answers have some merit, but something most people over look is that india is a young country. it gained independance from the British only what, 60years ago. the countries you are comparing india with went through their industrial revolutions more than 200 years ago. all thing considered india is dominating the world markets growing at an exponential rate. already we have the worlds largest middle class. in about a decade we will be one of the worlds super powers. also a lot of this growth has been so fast that some people got left behind. which sorta explains the poverty as well.

India has a caste system.  People are born into a certain class.  Those born into a high class position are high class whether they have money or not.  It goes all the way down to the street beggars who disfigure themselves to get people to feel sorry for them in the hopes of having money given to them.

absebce of honesty, lack of commitment from both the govt and the people are some of the factors which results to poverty in India. Religion infact teahces ur to help each other...but what to do....the system is so corrupted
