Why do we sing "Rock a bye baby" to lull our little ones to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle to the ground?

Its not what you sing, its the tempo and soothing notes in your voice (no matter how badly you sing - like me)

It rhymes and also the person using their arms as the baby's cradle can act it out and lower the baby into the actual cradle (cot) at the appropriate time.

If you study Nursey Rhymes you will find horror , murder and

because nursery rhymes (and 'children's stories) are historically written by people who don't actually fancy children

It is a rather warped concept.

Who thinks up these kid things ?  Snow White and poison apples.  I guess  many children's stories are equally extreme.  Kids have short attention spans so I guess lyrics like that keep them concentrating. Then when something negative happens the kids want to hug mom or dad for protection and comfort against such evil things happening.

Just a theory.
